What’s the right TV, movie & sports streaming service for you?

Streaming TV shows, movies and sports is now the norm for getting an entertainment or sports fix, and there are plenty of services to choose from.

Netflix, Stan, Disney+, Apple TV+, Kayo, Optus Sports… with the many TV and movie streaming services available, phrases like “there’s nothing to watch on TV” are a thing of the past!

 

It’s ok to ask… What’s streaming?

Don’t worry, there are no silly questions here. Streaming refers to accessing music and video content on an internet connected device without downloading it first. 

TV and sports streaming services provide the content and you just BYO internet connection, data and device. 

With the abundance of content ready for us to consume, you can watch what you want, when you want, how you want. 

  

What streaming services are available?

There’s a wide range of awesome, binge-enticing, streaming services available and we’ve outlined them below.

While there are many providers of streaming services, our list includes pure play streaming services (as opposed to channel services that offer some streaming).

 

 

Movies and TV Shows

Netflix

Netflix 

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services, and provides a large variety of TV shows, movies and docos. The more you watch, the better Netflix gets at recommending you TV shows and movies it thinks you would love. 

  

How much does it cost? 

There’s a free 1-month trial, and following that the monthly subscription fee will kick in.

How do I access it? 

You can sign up for Netflix online or via the Netflix app on your Smart TV, gaming console, streaming media player, blu-ray player, smartphone, tablet or laptop. 

Some Smart TVs and devices come preloaded with the Netflix app – bonus! 

 

Stan

Stan 

Australian-owned Stan features unlimited access to TV shows, movies, docos and addictive original content. It also tends to have more Australian content that other streaming services. 

 

How much does it cost? 

Stan has a free 30 day trial, and then a monthly subscription fee applies.

How do I access it? 

You can sign up for Stan on their website, just follow all the prompts. 

You’ll be able to watch Stan on Smart TVs, blu-ray players, gaming consoles (PS4 and Xbox One), media streaming devices (like Apple TV, Fetch TV, etc), mobile devices and computers/laptops. 

  

Disney+

Disney+

With Disney+ you can stream and watch the best from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic. Featuring new releases, exclusive Originals and the classics.

You can watch Disney+ on your mobile, tablet, TV, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.

 

How much does it cost?

There’s a 7-day free trial and after that it’s $8.99 a month, with the ability to watch from four different devices at once.

 

How do I access it?

You can sign up to Disney+ online or via the app downloaded to your mobile, tablet, TV, Apple TV, PS4 or Xbox One. The app is available in the App Store, Google Play and via your smart TV’s app store.

 

Apple TV+

Apple TV+

Apple TV+ is Apple’s new streaming video on demand service, featuring their own original and new content, available on your smart device via the Apple TV app.

Apple TV+ appears like a channel in the Apple TV app. While the content in Apple TV+ is available to watch as part of the monthly subscription, there is also host of other content and channels on the Apple TV app that are available to rent or buy.

 

How much does it cost?

Purchase any new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch from 10 September 2019 and you’ll enjoy one year of Apple TV+ for free.

For everyone else, there is a free seven-day trial and then it’s $7.99 a month with access for up to six people (Family Sharing).

 

How do I access it?

Download the Apple TV app on your compatible device or smart TV and get started with Apple TV+. Or you can sign up and watch on the web.

 

 

Sports

Optus Sport

Optus Sport

Optus Sport is a dedicated football app and channel featuring Premier League, Champions League, Euro 2020, Europa League, European Qualifiers, J.League, FA Women’s Super League, Optus Sport Originals.

You can watch live and on-demand matches, expert post-match analysis, highlights, replays, mini-matches, statistics and special features on your mobile, tablet, laptop and PC or via your TV on Fetch, Xbox, Chromecast, Apple TV and compatible streaming devices.

 

How much does it cost? 

Optus Sport is available for $14.99 a month.

If you’re an existing Optus customer, Optus Sport is available as an optional extra and may be available at no cost on many post-paid mobile and fixed plans, just check your eligibility to find out.

 

How do I access it? 

You can create an Optus Sport account online or via the Optus Sport app, available on the App Store or Google Play.

 

 

Kayo Sports

Kayo Sports

Kayo is a sports fan’s paradise, where you can stream over 50 sports live or on demand, straight to your TV or favourite device.

You can sign up online and while you’re there find the right mobile or TV app to download.

 

 

Tip: 

If you’re not sure which one to go with – give them all a trial! Just keep track of trial dates so you can cancel the ones you don’t want to use before the subscription charges apply.
